Three Things That Happened in March

Speculation Tax Declaration Deadline Closed (March 31)

Property owners in designated BC taxable areas had until March 31 to declare. Missed it? Penalties apply. For 2026, rates jumped: Canadians now pay 1% (up from 0.5%), foreign owners pay 3% (up from 2%). Learn more about declaration requirements.


BC Budget Expanded Housing Tax Burden

Beyond speculation tax increases, BC’s budget adds 3.5% property tax deferment interest rates, PST on commercial real estate services (October), and higher school taxes on properties over $3M. See what changed in the BC budget. One win: purpose-built rentals with 4+ units now get exemptions, which could accelerate new rental buildings.


Bank of Canada Holding (Rates Frozen)

March 18 decision: overnight rate stays at 2.25%, prime rate stays at 4.45%. No relief for borrowers, but no spike either. Check the latest BoC decision if you’re planning a renewal. 5-year fixed rates hover around 4.09%.
